The Technician class license is the entry-level license for new ham radio operators. It gives you all operating privileges on VHF and UHF frequencies—the most popular bands for local communication. With a Technician license, you can use handheld radios to talk on local repeaters, participate in our Sunday Night Net, and even communicate through satellites!
The Technician exam consists of 35 multiple-choice questions from a publicly available question pool. You don't need to be an electronics expert, and there's no Morse code requirement! We recommend using a mix of these resources to learn the material.
The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual is the gold standard for a comprehensive understanding of the material.
Use sites like HamStudy.org for free flashcards and practice exams. Mobile apps like Ham Radio Prep are also great for studying on the go.
When you're consistently passing practice exams, you're ready! Exams are administered by friendly, local Volunteer Examiners (VEs). Our club holds testing sessions periodically, and you can find other sessions in the area through the ARRL.
Once your call sign appears in the FCC database, you're officially a ham! The best next step is to get a radio, get on the air, and join the club. We'll be happy to help you make your first contact.
