Be Prepared: Read through the script beforehand. Have a notepad and pen ready.
Speak Clearly: Talk at a moderate pace and enunciate.
Be Patient: Give people time to respond. Wait a few seconds after asking for check-ins.
Have Fun! The goal is to have a friendly, welcoming conversation.
Identify Yourself: Remember to state your call sign frequently, as required by FCC rules.
At 8:00 PM, Open the Net: Read the following preamble clearly.
"QST, QST, QST. Welcome to the Sunday Night Detroit Lakes Amateur Repeater net on the W0EMZ repeater. This is [Your Name], [Your Call Sign], your net control operator for this evening.
This net meets every Sunday at 8:00 PM local time on the W0EMZ repeater. This is a directed net, so please direct all of your comments or questions to the net control operator and please do not transmit until asked to do so.
The purpose of this net is to promote activity on our local repeater, socialize, and share information. All licensed amateurs are welcome to check in."
Taking Check-ins: Ask for check-ins. Keep a list of who has checked in.
"At this time I'll now take check-ins. Please call now with your call sign, name, and location."
After a few check-ins: Acknowledge each station you heard. Go back to them one by one for comments.
"I heard [Call Sign 1], [Call Sign 2], and [Call Sign 3]. Let's go back to the top. [Call Sign 1], what do you have for the net tonight?"
Closing the Net: When activity has slowed, read the closing statement.
"Hearing no further check-ins, I will now close the Detroit Lakes Amateur Radio Club Sunday Night Net. I would like to thank everyone who participated this evening. The repeater is now returned to regular amateur use. This is [Your Call Sign], 73!"
